Applying for a DigiD if you live Abroad

Do you live abroad, are you registered in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI), and do you need a DigiD? You can apply for a DigiD via digid.nl. After applying, you must visit us in person to receive an activation code. You can complete this process in 3 steps.

Apply for a DigiD

Apply for your DigiD at digid.nl/en/aanvragen_buitenland. Important: Remember your username and password.

Did you receive an error during the application? Your personal data may not be correctly registered in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI). In that case, you’ll need to update your information in the RNI first.

Make an appointment

After applying for DigiD, you will receive a desk code (baliecode) via email and SMS. You must present this code to us within 30 days. Make an appointment to do this at the RNI desk (Tweede Walstraat 14, Nijmegen).

Bring with you:

  • The desk code (baliecode)
  • A valid passport or ID card (with the same document number used during the DigiD application)
  • Your citizen service number (BSN)
  • The mobile phone used during your DigiD application
  • Are you applying for DigiD on behalf of a family member, such as a child? Make sure they come with you to the appointment.

Activate your DigiD

At your appointment, you will receive an activation code. Go to digid.nl/activeren within 21 days to activate your account using this code.

Tip: Try to activate your DigiD at the desk immediately after your appointment. If you encounter any issues, you can ask for help on the spot.

  • You live abroad
  • You have a valid passport or ID card
  • You are registered in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI) and have a citizen service number (BSN)
  • You have a mobile phone that can receive text messages
  • You have an email address

If you want to handle official matters online in the Netherlands — such as with the government, banks, health insurers, or the Dutch Tax Administration — you will often need a DigiD. DigiD is a secure login method that allows you to prove your identity online.
